Curriculum: Our grade level will be piloting two English Language Arts curricula from August-December. We will be piloting Houghton Mifflin Harcourt until October and then Amplify until December. Our district will adopt one of these curricula before January.
The Social Studies area of focus is on Ancient Civilizations.
Digital Citizenship
The curriculum is designed to help you become a productive digital learner who can navigate and utilize the Internet appropriately as needed to enrich your understanding of the topics we study. You will research, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information using internet-based tools and references. Class assignments will often be completed and submitted using your Google Drive and Classroom accounts.
Grade Updates: Detailed progress reports will be sent home at the end of every trimester for you and your child to review. In addition, parents and students may view and monitor grades and progress online using PowerSchool. Please see the office for login information.
Absences & Tardies: All missed work must be made up (including class work). Tests/quizzes will be made up during class time. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure all missed work is received and made up. Students not in their assigned seats when the bell rings will be marked tardy.
If a student plans to miss more than three days of school, the District requires that an Independent Study Contract be completed in advance. Please let the teacher and school office know at least seven days in advance in order for work to be compiled. Completing schoolwork while absent insures that the student does not fall behind, and also insures that the school continues to receive State money, based on the school’s average daily attendance figures.
Homework: Traditional homework is rarely assigned in my class. There may be occasional projects or class work that need completed at home, or a reading to complete or video to watch prior to coming to class, but it will not be on a nightly basis. Any assignments or upcoming projects will be recorded in the Student Planner and also added to our class Google Calendar and posted on the class website (teachermrsrubino.weebly.com). Please check your child’s planner to ensure he/she is staying on top of homework assignments.
Missing Assignments: All missed work must be made up, including work missed during an absence. There will be a Mon- Fri organizer in the back of the room with extra copies of any work you may have missed. In-class assignments that are not turned in will be marked with “Missing” in PowerSchool. All students should check their PowerSchool accounts on a regular basis to stay on top of missing assignments.
Late Work: It is always better to turn in work late rather than never at all! I will always accept the work, even if it’s late. There will be a designated Turn in Work Folder in the classroom.
Poor Assignment Grades: I view grades as a demonstration of how much you've learned or understand about a concept. At any time you feel the grade you have earned does not accurately reflect your knowledge of a topic, please come talk to me to go over ways you can demonstrate your learning in a different way.
Office Hours: Students needing extra help with completing assignments or getting caught up on work may stay after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 3:15pm. Students will need to coordinate their own ride home.
Bathroom Use: Students are expected to take care of their needs before school, after school, at lunch, break or during passing periods.
Classroom Rules: It is important to create a warm, productive, and safe learning community for all students and the teacher as well. Therefore, the following classroom rules will be observed:
Be respectful Be responsible Be safe
Students who do not abide by classroom rules will receive appropriate consequences on a case-by-case basis.
Repeated behavior infractions may result in any or all of the following: Time out in or out of classroom, referral to office, phone call home, log entry in PowerSchool, parent conference.
Website: Please bookmark our class website at http://teachermrsrubino.weebly.com/. I frequently update it with homework posts, announcements, and information for class. Students, please share your Google Classroom accounts (District username and password) with your parents since we will use it often.
Misc.: Please contact Mrs. Rubino if you have any other questions not outlined in the syllabus.
